Literacy Program Manager, H-E-B, San Antonio, TX

What services & products does your company provide?
H-E-B is a privately owned grocery company with stores in Texas and Mexico that believes the children of Texas deserve a healthy future. As such, we’ve expanded our commitment to providing the freshest food to include other important things children need to thrive. We’re nourishing the future by supporting Texas family literacy and early childhood education.

Why literacy? Reading skills improve a child’s quality of life. When reading skills improve, children are happier, more likely to succeed in school, less likely to drop out, and more likely to attend college. That’s a brighter future for the child, for the family, and for Texas.

For too many children, the current reality is that they are not reading or being read to enough. The statistics are sobering — Texas has one of the highest rates in the country of preschool children who are not read to on a regular basis.

That’s why we launched the Read 3 initiative in 2012. Read 3’s focus is educating parents and caregivers and providing them with the tools they need to prepare their early learners, with a specific emphasis on reading to children a minimum of three times per week.

What trends do you see in the library market?

Libraries have become a hub of community activity from hosting seasonal events to providing community members with knowledge and tools to enter the work force.

What motivates you to be a member of TLA?
H-E-B Read 3 is proud to support Texas librarians through our sponsorship of the TLA Conference.
