As Time Goes By Instructions - Part 1

 

Introduction/Purpose of Program

 Students sharpen their observation skills by determining the matching current day pictures to pictures taken in Abilene during World War II found by searching The Portal to Texas History.

 

TEKS

English Language Arts, 6th Grade 23A, 7th 23A - Research gathering sources. Students determine, locate, and explore the full range of relevant sources addressing a research question and systematically record the information they gather. Students are expected to (A) follow the research plan to collect data from a range of print and electronic resources and data from experts.

 

Social Studies, 7th Grade 1A - Identify major eras in Texas History > Texas in World War II, 7E - Analyze the political, economic, and social impact of major events > World War II > on the history of Texas.

 

Detailed Description of the Program

 

• Working online, students locate pictures taken in Abilene, Texas during World War II through The Portal to Texas History.

• Students download them to a Word.doc or Google.doc.

• Students document a citation for each picture located online.

• Students examine the included pictures deciding which current day pictures match the pictures downloaded from the Portal to Texas History.

• Students support their choices and record at least 3 details that connect the sets of pictures.

As Time Goes By - Part 1

 

AbrakaPOW by Isaiah Campbell is set in Abilene, Texas at Camp Barkeley a prisoner of war camp for German soldiers captured during World War II. Today, you are going to examine and compare pictures of Abilene taken during World War II and today.

 

Directions:

1. Set up an MS Word doc or a Google Doc with your name and other information required by your teacher. Set your page setting for landscape so that your photographs are larger.

 

2. Find The Portal to Texas History @ https://texashistory.unt.eduor just search for The Portal to Texas History.

 

3. In the search bar on the main page, enter “Jack Yates Collection.” Scroll through the results and locate the pictures 1-9 listed below. For the next pictures, return to the home screen of The Portal to Texas History. Put the name of the picture in the search box and search individually for pictures 10-13 using exact wording.

 

4. Click on the photograph, then click again to enlarge the photograph.

 

5. Above the photograph click on the words “tools/download.” Then click on “Download Large.”

 

6. Locate the downloaded image and drag it to your doc in MS Word or Google Docs.

 

7. Edit the photograph by trimming off the edges and pulling the corner of the photograph to a larger size for better viewing. 

 

8. Always cite your source. Each time you download a picture from The Portal to Texas History, copy the citation. Look below the image where The Portal to Texas History has a hot button to ‘Copy Citation.’ Click on that button. Place the citation underneath your historical photograph by clicking beneath your photograph and then paste it into your doc with Ctrl+v or Command+v.

 

9. Examine the attached photographs taken in Abilene, Texas, in January 2018. Much has changed. Look closely at architecture, roads, and other markers that will point to the matching current day picture.

 

10. Drag and drop the matching current day picture from this document and place it under the World War II picture. List at least (3) indicators that you noticed allowing you to match them. Look closely at the background buildings.

 

11. Your grade results from the correct matching of pictures with additional points awarded for more than (3) comparison indicators.

12. Save your paper and email, share, or turn in your paper through Google Classroom.

General Introduction to Active Program

This program will help teens explore the geography of the area in which Abrakapow takes place.

The participants will learn about and journey through three of the four natural regions of Texas.  The teens will interact with maps and learn about climate, plant and animal life, landforms, and other resources.

 

Activity Title

Escape from Camp Barkeley: from the plains to the mountains

 

Activity Introduction

The prisoners escaped from Camp Barkeley in four (4) groups.  Staring with four groups, each group will follow one of the journeys attempted by the prisoners.  Then, the group members will decide what you will need for the journey, such as food, type of clothing, etc., based on the length of the expected trip.

 

Detailed Description of Activity

Teens will get into four groups.  The librarian/teacher may create them or allow the students to make their own groups.

Group 1 will follow follow Blaz and his group.
Group 2 will follow the prisoners who head for Winters, TX.
Group 3 will follow the prisoners who head for San Angelo, TX.
Group 4 will follow Josef and Herbert.
All groups are headed for Mexico through El Paso.

Each team will have one of the following: map with regions, descriptions of the three regions, description of path taken.  This can be on an electronic device or in hard copy form.  Paper and pencil/pen may also be used for this activity.

Using the resources given, each group will:

Use the map and description of path to learn what region the prisoners would encounter and how long it would take to get there

Use the descriptions of the region(s) to learn about the terrain in order to create a list of materials needed

Create the list of materials, including how much of each item would be needed.  Teams should be able to explain why the materials and amount were selected.

Each team will present to the others what they learned regarding the trek and what materials were chosen.  Presentations can be in any format the librarian/teacher choses.

Show the path the group of prisoners should have taken and describe what terrain they would go through.

How long would it take them to get there?

What materials should they have to be successful?  How much of each piece?

Group 1:  Blaz’s group is heading to Mexico through Tuscola, TX, where they will pick up a car.  This means they will be walking to Tuscola and then drive to Mexico.

 

Traveling times:

Walking on flat land = 3 miles per 1 hour

Walking on more challenging terrain = 2 miles per 1 hour

Trains average 49 miles per hour

Cars were limited to a speed limit of 45 miles per 1 hour in 1944.

 

Camp Barkeley to Tuscola portion:

What is the terrain like?

How far is it to Tuscola?  How long will it take to walk there?

What will they need for their walk to Tuscola?  How much is needed?

 

Tuscola to El Paso/Mexico portion:

What is the terrain like?  How does this differ from the walk to Tuscola?  Does the terrain matter?

How far is it to El Paso?  How long will it take to drive there?

What will they need for their drive to El Paso/Mexico?  How much is needed?

 

Blaz gets away from his group.  He gets on a train (with Judy) to Sweetwater and then another train to El Paso.  Will he be okay with what materials he has with him? What about Judy?

Activity Introduction

Using the Texas State Historical Association’s (TSHA) Handbook of Texas site, students will search for articles about German Prisoner of War camps in Texas and Camp Barkeley.  They will answer fifteen questions taken from the contents of these articles. These questions can be provided online or on paper.  Then, the students can, if you wish, print a certificate of completion.  After completion, you can allow students to earn prizes, if you wish.

Detailed Description of Activity

Students will open the quiz on the computer (https://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=mjezmzc3oqswdf) OR get the paper quiz.

Students will open the link to the TSHA’s Handbook of Texas site.
            https://tshaonline.org/handbook

Students will search for the “Camp Barkeley” and "German Prisoners of War" articles.

After reading the articles, the students will answer the quiz questions.

Then, one of two actions:

1.  Students will take the paper quiz to a library professional for grading (unless you want the students to grade their own quiz). Choose your incentive plan.

2.  Students will print out their results and/or certificates.  Perhaps show the certificate to the professional.  The online quiz provided allows for results to be reported to selected people.  Choose your incentive plan.

Options for incentives/prizes:

            1. Anyone who gets a grade of 70% or better will receive a prize.

            2. The quiz can be timed, which is an option on the online quiz provided.  Whoever completes it perfectly in the shortest time receives the best prize.  The student with the next best time receives the next best prize, etc.

            3.  Will the students be able to take the quiz multiple times?  This is an option on the online quiz provided.
