“If you love it, click it”—that’s the child-friendly message in Bernard in the Backseat, a picture book from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) that promotes the use of child safety seats. Texas librarians can help promote this important traffic safety message to families with young children by sharing the book through story times and in-school readings.

Bernard in the Backseat is available free of charge as part of TxDOT’s annual “Save Me with a Seat” child passenger safety public awareness campaign in September. Order your copies from Texas Department of State Health Services’ Safe Riders program online. The book is also available for download at SaveMeWithaSeat.org.

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among children, and TxDOT is joining with safety advocates statewide to remind parents to always buckle up their children. That means selecting the safety seat that’s appropriate for the child’s age and size and installing it correctly.

Two out of three child safety seats are misused, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Information about correct safety seat use and where to make an appointment for a free safety seat checkup can be found at SaveMeWithaSeat.org.
