Black Caucus Stipend

The purpose of the stipend is to further the professional growth of African descent library school students in the state of Texas by granting $500 per-person for registration fees and conference expenses to attend the Texas Library Association Annual Conference. Applicants are judged on an essay of 250-500 words describing how they will benefit from attending the annual conference. One stipend will be awarded for the TLA Annual Conference.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The student must be of sub-Saharan African descent.
  • The student must be enrolled as full-time or part-time students at an American Library Association accredited university or an NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accredited program and pursuing a Library Science or Information Science/MLS/MLIS or certification requirement in library information services area in Texas.
  • The student must be a TLA and Black Caucus member at the time of winning the stipend. (A student rate is available.)
  • The student must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Please submit the following with your completed typed application:

  • 250-500 word essay, typed and double-spaced, in .doc or .pdf, describing how the applicant will benefit from attending the TLA Annual Conference. Student(s) will be selected for their academic merit and the essay.
  • The applicant must be willing to submit proof of conference attendance if selected.
  • An official transcript (signed and sealed).

The applicant must:

  • Show proof of registration for the TLA 2019 Conference due by March 1, 2019. (Send via email to the chair of the BCRT Conference Stipends Committee; Sean Godfrey.)
  • Attend the TLA BCRT General Business Meeting and BCRT Reception during TLA Annual Conference.
  • Volunteer for two-hours at the TLA Black Caucus Round Table booth during the conference.
  • Be willing to submit proof of conference attendance and must send a 250-500-word follow-up essay about how the applicant benefited from attending the TLA library conference: due by June 5, 2019. The essay will be printed in the BCRT Newsletter. Send via email to the chair of the BCRT Conference Stipends Committee; Sean Godfrey.

The winner will receive a check for $250 after the week after the announcement is made on February 19, 2019. A second check for $250 will be mailed after the conference and after the follow-up essay is received (this essay is due June 5, 2019-please see above).

February 26, 2019 First check for $250 mailed to the winner
April 15–18, 2019 TLA Conference: Austin, Texas

Second check for $250 will be mailed to the winner after all requirements have been fulfilled.
