Black Caucus Stipend

The purpose of the stipend is to further the professional growth of African descent library school students in the state of Texas by awarding five recipients the early-bird member rate for registration fees ($69 per person) for the 2021 Texas Library Association Annual Conference. Applicants are judged on an essay of 250-500 words describing how they will benefit from attending the annual conference. Five stipends will be awarded for the 2021 TLA Annual Conference. TLA 2021 is a fully virtual conference scheduled for April 22-24, 2021.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The student must be of sub-Saharan African descent.
  • The student must be enrolled as full-time or part-time students at an American Library Association accredited university or an NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accredited program and pursuing a Library Science or Information Science/MLS/MLIS or certification requirement in library information services area in Texas.
  • The student must be a TLA and Black Caucus member at the time of winning the stipend. (A student rate is available.)
  • The student must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Please submit the following with your completed typed application:

  • 250-500 word essay, typed and double-spaced, in .doc or .pdf, describing how the applicant will benefit from attending the TLA Annual Conference. Student(s) will be selected for their academic merit and the essay.
  • The applicant must be willing to submit proof of conference attendance if selected.
  • An official transcript (signed and sealed).

The applicant must:

  • Register for the TLA Annual Conference by January 15, 2021, for the early-bird member rate of $69.
  • Must show proof of registration for the TLA 2021 Conference due by March 1, 2021. Send via email to the chair of the BCRT Conference Stipend Committee; roosevelt.weeks@austintexas.gov
  • Winner must write a reflective essay about the benefit of attending the TLA library conference due by May 15, 2021. Essay will be printed in the BCRT Newsletter. Send via email to roosevelt.weeks@austintexas.gov.

Timeline

  • September 1, 2020 to November 30, 2020 – Promoting stipend application to Texas Colleges and Universities and turning in application/essay
  • December 1, 2020 ALL applications are due by 5 pm CST
  • January 4, 2021 Scholarship announcement
  • April 22-24, TLA 2021 Annual Conference (fully virtual)
  • May 15, 2021 Reflection Essay due
