TLA TALKS: The Pedagogy of Poetry; Beyond Shakespeare and Robert Frost

August 31, 2021 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Join Ethan Wang, the 2020 National Student Poet for the Southwest, from Katy ISD, to learn how to move past traditional poetry lessons and learner engagement. Ethan’s session is centered around helping educators and librarians develop poetry curricula more relevant to the current moment than just iambs and alliteration. This webinar will conclude with Ethan sharing an exercise with the group that can expand students’ and patrons’ appreciation for non-traditional poetry.

Wang attends Cinco Ranch High School. Raised by a family with a literary background in China, he was encouraged to read from a young age. His poems are written as attempts to tell personal stories, depict nostalgia, and embody the disjointed cultures he grew up with. Although Ethan usually writes poems for himself, he has published one collection titled Cloudy Skies.

Learning objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Employ various ways to get learners interested in poetry as a medium of self-expression.
2. Incorporate the writing of poetry more broadly and knowledgeably into library programming.

Cost:  Free for TLA members; $25 for nonmembers
