2023 Little Maverick Graphic Reading List Announced
Graphic novels are engaging and powerful, combining images and text to draw in readers and keep them enthralled. They welcome everyone into a reading conversation, inviting in reluctant readers and English as a Second Language students and giving dyslexic students multiple clues to the storyline. For example, even very young readers can follow the adventures of Elinor and her friends when they visit a grove of giant sequoias in Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson’s Elinor Wonders Why: Forest Giants. And older students will enjoy the fun and creepy thrills of Cullen Bunn’s The Ghoul Next Door.
The 2023 Little Maverick Graphic Novel Reading List is a recommended reading list of graphic novels designed for children in grades K-5. These books were selected by public and school librarians who are members of the Texas Library Association’s Children’s Round Table, which promotes services to children and young people.
Each book is valuable; there are many titles which inform and entertain. Bunnicula: The Graphic Novel, by James Howe and Andrew Donkin, introduces this classic to a new generation, while the fanciful Marshmallow and Jordan by Alina Chau tells a story of friendship between a magical elephant and the disabled girl he befriends. This delightful list is filled with titles elementary students are sure to enjoy.
