Matthew Glaser
Library Director
Hewitt Public Library

What inspired you to become a librarian?
I worked in my high school library as a sophomore. I remember my librarian being so interested in every student, adapting to what they needed, and always being a friendly face. It seemed like she could tell you where any one item was without looking at the catalog – probably because she still maintained an actual card catalog in her office! I decided that this was the job I wanted. In college, I was a composition tutor in the library, and being able to help people find resources and use them really just sealed the deal on my career path.

What is an innovative practice at your library/organization you would like to share with others?
We have the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten backpacks here, and I know many other libraries do the same. We also consistently put out children’s book bundles as grab-and-go displays. The convenience of both of these is one that busy parents are incredibly grateful for since they don’t have to browse in a hurry. We go through so many different topics for each bundle in a week. (It really boosts our circulations, too!)

If you could have dinner with three authors (living or dead), who would they be and why?
Charles Dickens, Willa Cather, and Patricia Highsmith – for no other reason than I just want to see what kind of conversation they would create.

What are you reading right now?
Sociopath: A Memoir by Patric Gagne. It’s about what you think it is, and it’s very good.

What is your most memorable Texas Library Association Experience?
I follow several authors on social media, as one does, and I saw a tweet from one author who was on the way to the annual conference. When I got to see him in his signing line, I brought it up. “Thanks, I almost forgot about that embarrassing thing that happened,” was his response. I have that memory stored in the “awkward interactions” part of my brain.

Advice to new librarians?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Network with anyone and everyone you come across. Self-promote your accomplishments shamelessly. There is so much about being a librarian that you will not learn in a classroom, and talking to people is the best way to establish a network of resources for both the people you serve and your own professional network. You never know who you will meet and what collaborations might come your way.

Share your hobbies, hidden talents, and anything people might not know about you.
I can wiggle my ears, which probably isn’t impressive, but Google says it’s rare(ish) and I’m running with it.

Please finish this sentence. “I am a TLA member because…”
I am a TLA member because I feel empowered knowing that I am a part of a statewide support system that will help me grow and thrive.
