What are your job responsibilities at TLA?
I act as support and coordination for different units/committees in TLA. These include all the reading lists under the RLCC as well as the Texas Bluebonnet Award, helping to plan the district meetings with the officers, coordinating programming with various units for Annual Conference, and more.
Tell us three things about yourself. (Note: this can be anything: pets, hobbies, really whatever you like.)
What’s a book, movie, album, or podcast you enjoyed recently that you’d recommend and why?
Not very recent, but one of my favorite books I’ve read over the last couple of years is THE BULLET SWALLOWER by Elizabeth Gonzalez James. It’s “Cormac McCarthy meets Gabriel Garcia Marquez.” It’s an exciting version of magical realism that Chicano Lit does so, so well. It’s the kind of book you enjoy reading and then have to go talk about with someone.
What’s your favorite place in Texas?
Not one, but any of the museums in Houston. There are so many with so many different kinds of art and experiences. I’ve seen so many cool unique exhibits and events there over the years.
What would you like to share with members about TLA that they might not know?
Everyone at TLA is so, so helpful and supportive. Whether its helping new employees like myself settle into the job and answer the same questions over and over or helping our volunteers with planning their programs and providing them with the best support in their membership. Everyone is happy to step up and support others.
