Staff Spotlight: Julie Marshall
The TLA Staff Spotlight series is an occasional series where we highlight different members of the TLA staff. It’s part of our effort to make sure you know who the TLA staff is, so you’re more familiar with us when you need to contact us. We love to hear from members!
Name: Julie Marshall
Position: Director of Education
What are your job responsibilities at TLA?
I lead the educational programming, instructional design strategy, and content development for TLA’s professional development portfolio. I work with an amazing team of staff and volunteers to serve our members with high-quality, relevant, and engaging programming for all of our conferences and events.
Tell us three things about yourself.
- I love spending time with my husband of nearly 30 years, Kevin, our two grown kids, Gray and Tessa, and the two very best dogs in the world, Max and Mollie.
- I walk two to three miles every day; it is my moving meditation and keeps me sane.
- I enjoy creative pursuits: baking, photography, gardening, and decorating my house.
What’s a book, movie, album or podcast you enjoyed recently that you’d recommend and why?
I am a big reader, so that is a difficult question! But three that I have enjoyed recently and would recommend are: Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling (near-future dystopia, tough women making a difference, thrilling pace), Forget the Alamo by Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson and Jason Stanford (historic nonfiction that is so compelling and enjoyable that you stay up late and get up early to read), and When Women were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill (fun, spiky, feminist exploration of a woman’s role in the 1950s, with dragons).
What’s your favorite place in Texas?
I love the Enchanted Rock/Llano area during bluebonnet season for hiking, camping and finding delicious, down-home diners.
What would you like to share with members about TLA that they might not know?
Working with TLA members and our dedicated volunteers is an absolute joy. The TLA staff is so inspired by our members’ commitment to service, excellence, and innovation; it encourages us to approach what we do with the same passion and drive as we work to advance the TLA mission and vision.
