1. What inspired you to become a librarian?
My former director suggested the career because of my vast interests, work experience, and my intense love of learning.
2. What is an innovative practice at your library/organization (current or former) you would like to share with others?
We have an amazing Studio consisting of makerspace and arts and crafts areas which I refer to as the Techie/Nerdy, Smarty/Arty spaces. We have some of the standard equipment you see in many libraries including 3D printers, a laser engraver, and a large format poster printer. We also have some unexpected machines like our sublimation printer, heat presses, and our large UV printer that we lovingly refer to as “The Big Baby” because it does amazing things but needs lots of attention.
3. If you could have dinner with three authors (living or dead), who would they be and why?
C.S. Lewis – So much creativity mixed with honesty.
Jill Briscoe – This woman knows how to live for Christ, and I would love to just sit next to her and listen.
Kelley Mathews – An amazing friend of mine that makes me want to be a better friend. I get to sit with her less than I used to, but each time I speak with her, it is a gift.
4. What are you reading right now?
I currently have a bookmark in Seeing the Supernatural by Lee Strobel, and I just finished Sociopath: A Memoir by Patric Gagne, Ph.D. I love personal stories.
5. What is your most memorable Texas Library Association experience?
I am a previous art teacher and lover of picture books, so I always enjoy heading to the Illustrator Sketch-Off. I appreciate the ability to draw under pressure, and the creativity and various styles are just plain fun to watch.
6. Advice to new librarians?
Keep learning. Learn what you love and speak up about it. Have all the patience with people that you would want when asking a question or learning something new.
7. Share your hobbies, hidden talents, or anything people might not know about you.
I make things. Lots of things. From lampwork beads, to ceramics, to wire work and painting. It may not always look great, but most of the time, it’s the process that matters to me most. Creating is part of my worship to the God that made me and loves me.
8. Anything else you would like to share?
If you ever visit the Anna Community Library, please stop by the Studio and see if I’m around. I’d love to help you brainstorm a solution to whatever it is you are stuck on.
9. Please finish this sentence. “I am a TLA member because…”
As someone that is new to the library world, TLA has given me the opportunity to see inside the library world through education and networking opportunities.
