Legislative Advocacy Training at the Capitol

June 17 @ 9:30 am - 3:30 pm

Get ready for a dynamic day at the Texas Capitol focused on learning, engaging, and connecting! Summer is the ideal time to connect with elected officials in preparation for the 90th Texas Legislature which opens on January 12, 2027.

Representative Donna Howard will be our keynote speaker. With more than 17 years of experience as a Texas legislator, Rep. Howard serves on the House Appropriations and Higher Education committees. She has earned a reputation across the political spectrum for her respectful, but passionate, articulation of her values.

Lucy Podmore, high school librarian and TLA Legislative Committee Chair, will moderate a panel with guests Kristen Ylana, Rep. Howard’s Chief of Staff, and Erica Richardson, Director of Benbrook Public Library. They will offer insider tips on effectively communicating with elected officials and becoming a trusted resource. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to drop by your legislator’s office in the Capitol, develop your top advocacy talking points, and leave with an action plan.

Whether you’re a seasoned advocate or just getting started, this day is all about getting involved, sharing your passion, and gaining the confidence to be a powerful voice for libraries. Don’t miss this interactive opportunity to sharpen your advocacy skills while connecting with others who share your mission. Let’s make an impact together!
