The TLA Public Library Director Certificate Program is a is a flexible, competency-based pathway designed to ensure you are well-prepared, confident, and supported as you serve your community in an increasingly complex public library landscape.

Who is this program for?

This program is specifically designed for:

  • Experienced Directors: 5–10 years’ experience
  • Aspiring Leaders: Preparing for their first directorship
  • Others: Hired from outside or have the duties of a library director

Program Framework

Focus on meaningful skill development through a mix of virtual and in-person learning.

  • 36 Total Hours | 2-Year Pathway
  • 30 Core Hours: Building essential, director-level expertise in 10 key areas including communications, organizational structure, budgeting, public safety and more.
  • 6 Elective Hours: Customizing your pathway based on your community’s specific needs.
  • Hybrid Learning: Multiple virtual sessions available at kickoff, with at least one in-person experience scheduled between January and March 2027.

Budget Planning

As you plan your upcoming budget, please note the following structure:

  • Enrollment Fee: $75 (Includes review to meet the program requirements)
  • Total Estimated Investment: *$1,700 to $2,900 over a two-year period

*Note: Costs vary based on your choice of sessions and attendance at in-person vs. online events.

Timeline

The program launches October 1, 2026.

    • March – April: Budget to participate in the program
    • May-September: Apply to participate
    • October: Program begins, virtual sessions will be available for registration along a worksheet to plan your certificate journey
    • September 2028: Program completion deadline approaching (some participants may finish in less time)
    • April 2029: Program graduates recognized at the TLA Annual Conference
