TLA scholarships are designed to support library professionals and students as they pursue their education and career goals. Whether you’re applying for the Vivian Greenfield Award, Ray C. Janeway Scholarship, or the TLA Summer School Scholarship, taking a little extra time to prepare your application can make a big difference.

Here are five tips to help you submit a strong application.

  1. Answer Every Part of the Question
Many essay prompts ask more than one question. If you’re asked about your goals and how the scholarship will help you achieve them, be sure to address both. Reviewers score each response using a rubric, so complete answers matter.
  2. Be Specific
Instead of writing about what you hope to do someday, explain exactly how you’ll use the scholarship. Describe your goals, the skills you’ll gain, and how they’ll benefit your library, community, or future career.
Specific examples help reviewers better understand your vision.
  3. Tell Your Story
Your application is more than a résumé. Use your essays to explain what motivates you, what experiences have shaped your career, and why this opportunity is important to you. Authentic, thoughtful responses are often more memorable than generic ones.
  4. Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
Give yourself enough time to gather recommendation letters, transcripts, and other required documents before the deadline. The application allows you to upload your résumé, recommendation letters, transcripts, and additional supporting materials in one place.
  5. Review Before You Submit
Before clicking submit, read through your application one last time.

    1. Ask yourself:
      1. Did I answer every question completely?
      2. Did I include all required documents?
      3. Have I proofread for spelling and grammar?
      4. Does my application clearly explain my goals and potential impact?

A polished application helps reviewers focus on your ideas!
